Chapter 13 Phoenix

Istared at the angry message thread on my laptop screen. The emails from Cyrus Rowe, CEO of Rowe & Wade Records - my father - still screaming his entitlement and ownership of me.

A week had passed since I stormed out of his office, my heels clicking my song of defiance across the marble floors as I’d fled my warden for good.

One week of silence. Of radio static where the constant chatter of label business had once filled my ears, my mind, my every waking breath. I’d thought I’d feel free, unburdened. Lighter somehow, without the crushing weight of my father’s expectations.

But instead, I just felt lost. Unmoored, a ship cut loose from its anchor to drift aimlessly on the tide.

It turned out, when you’d spent your entire life dancing to someone else’s tune, it was hard to find your own rhythm. To even know where to begin.

The cursor blinked under his threats of disinheritance, mocking me with its steady pulse. I closed my eyes, my fingers curling into fists against the keyboard.

What could I even say? “Sorry for choosing my own happiness over your iron fisted control?”

“Thanks for the trust issues and childhood trauma, but I’ve decided to strike out on my own?”

“Hey, Dad, you remember how you used to tell me I was just like Mom? Guess you were right - because I left you, too. Hope the abandonment issues keep you warm at night.”

A knock sounded at the door, startling me from my bitter spiral. I slammed the laptop shut and scrubbed at my gritter eyes, taking a moment to compose myself before calling out, “Come in!”

Talia breezed through the doorway in a cloud of Chanel and purpose, her smile bright enough to chase the shadows from the room.

“There you are, bitch! Why did you ditch me last night? It’s all about the girl code and you broke it!’ She wiggled her brows. “The fun was just getting started. We all went back to Ty’s place for a little late night fun if you know what I mean.”

Talia’s smile morphed into a playful frown. “Why the long face? You’re one tear drop away from tissue boxes on your feet, babbling about the Spruce Goose.”

Despite myself, I snorted. “Please. As if I’d ever wear a tissue box. It’s Louboutin’s or nothing, you know that.”

Talia plopped down on the couch beside me, looping her arm through mine and squeezing. “Damn straight. And don’t you forget it! Now, want to tell me why you’re holed up in here, staring at your email like it kicked your puppy?”

I sighed, leaning into her solid warmth. Talia was the one constant in my life, the Christmas star that always led me home. “I don’t know, it’s too much. How about a shot of fireball for some courage?”

“You read my mind.” She nodded, her perfectly sculpted brows dragging together in understanding. “I’ve got the hangover from hell.”

I went to the cabinet and took down two shot glasses along with a bottle of fireball.

“Damn, that stuff burns so good!” Talia licked her lips.
